Why Bare Root shrubs could become your best-selling plants!

At Kébol, we are putting Bare Root shrubs in the spotlight this month. Our European Bare Root Perennials Spring 2026 range includes an extensive selection of Bare Root shrubs, including a large number of popular Hydrangea varieties. These are not only loved by growers, garden centres and webshops, but are also a smart choice for your range. Thanks to their strong growth, easy shipping and wide variety of species, they ensure satisfied customers and good sales results.

Which bare-root shrub sells best?

Of all the bare-root shrubs we sell, no less than 75% are Hydrangeas. And with good reason, because these hydrangeas are real eye-catchers in the garden and score very well with consumers. By adding them to your range, you offer your customers a popular, reliable plant that proves itself year after year.

Our top five best-selling Hydrangea varieties:

  1. Hydrangea Annabelle
  2. Hydrangea Polar Bear
  3. Hydrangea Fraise Melba
  4. Hydrangea Vanille Fraise
  5. Hydrangea Hercules

In addition to Hydrangea, Cornus, Philadelphus and Viburnum also perform excellently in sales and in the garden.

8 reasons why bare-root shrubs are a smart choice for your range

  1. Stronger root system – Bare Root shrubs develop strong roots because they are grown directly in the ground. This prevents circling roots, which often occur in pot plants and can limit water and nutrient uptake.
  2. Fast rooting – Planted during the resting period (late autumn to early spring), bare-root shrubs root faster and more strongly, ensuring a strong start in the first growing season.
  3. Efficient transport and storage – Without potting soil, the plants are lighter, more compact and easy to package, which reduces logistics costs and simplifies storage.
  4. Wide range available – From popular varieties to niche varieties, there is a wide choice.
  5. Flexible order units – You can also order smaller quantities per variety, ideal for customisation.
  6. Suitable for container cultivation – All varieties can be potted in a 19 cm pot, C3 / 3L container matching common retail formats.
  7. Availability and fast turnaround time – Available in early spring and well-rooted and ready for sale after 10 – 12 weeks.
  8. Label tags included – For clear product identification and attractive presentation in the shop.

Packaging for optimal condition

Our bare-root shrubs are delivered in bundles of 5, packed in a bag with soil. This protects the root system during transport and storage, ensuring that the plants remain in top condition until they are potted or planted out.

Kébol looks back on two inspiring fairs

Recently, Kébol was present at two inspiring trade fairs where we not only showcased our products and innovations, but above all talked to customers, partners and peers. In both America and the Netherlands, we look back on valuable new contacts, positive prospects and promising developments for the coming season.

Succesful edition Dawin Perennials Day

Recently, Kébol attended Darwin Perennials Day at the beautiful Gardens of Ball West Chicago. During this annual event, leading perennial suppliers, including Kébol as bare root supplier, meet their customers in an informal setting. During the event, our colleagues Kees van der Meij and Joey Hufman had many valuable conversations with existing customers, and made new contacts in the United States.

The ambience among growers was remarkably positive: spring sales were excellent, with almost a record of sales around Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. That sets a promising tone for next season. Naturally, we took the opportunity to already draw our customers’ attention to our extensive autumn and spring ranges.

FlowerTrials® 2025: Innovation and inspiration at our own location

During this year’s FlowerTrials® 2025 in Rijsenhout, Kébol again hosted Benary, Elsner PAC and Volmary. Our location was transformed into an inspiring exhibition environment, where visitors were introduced to the latest developments in the field of potted and bedding plants. An extra highlight this year was the presentation of the prestigious Fleuro Star Award, which took place at our location.

In addition to our partners’ innovations, we presented our own highlights, including:

  • The new Quickfit display
    A smart and attractive solution for presenting summer flowering plants, perfectly tailored to both retailers and wholesalers. Download the Quick Fit display catalogue for full details.
  • New wax lines: Porcelain, Art and Metallic
    These unique amaryllis bulbs feature seasonal prints. The bulbs are real eye-catchers for the holiday season. A very attractive product for a broad target group, ideal for the retail and gift segments. View the range >

These were successful and inspiring days full of meeting new contacts and promising developments within the sector.

First containers with Amaryllis bulbs are on their way to Europe and the US

The annual Amaryllis harvest at our production site in Chan Chan, Peru, has started successfully. The first containers with carefully harvested and sorted Amaryllis bulbs are now on their way to Europe and the United States. This year’s assortment includes Amorita® Danu, Amorita® Esus, Apple Blossom, Christmas Gift, Minerva and Red Lion. Everything is proceeding according to plan and the outlook for the 2025 season is excellent.

Top-quality Amaryllis bulbs from Peru

The first quality checks are promising: the bulbs are well developed, strong and of uniform quality. Thanks to the unique climate conditions in Peru – dry conditions, abundant sunlight and minimal risk of disease – we can rely on a stable harvest with a high standard of quality. We have also doubled our processing capacity: over 140,000 bulbs are processed daily in two modern facilities, while maintaining top quality.

‘Thanks to the expansion of our capacity, we can currently process more than 140,000 Amaryllis bulbs per day while maintaining top quality.’ Jos van der Drift (Managing Director).

Why Amaryllis bulbs from Peru?

By growing Amaryllis in their natural environment in the Southern Hemisphere and harvesting them early, we ensure top quality and early availability in autumn. This early availability means the bulbs can bloom in consumers’ homes just in time for the key Christmas season.

The choice of this location is due to the unique climate, which provides the perfect conditions for growing Amaryllis bulbs. The dry climate minimizes crop diseases and reduces the need for crop protection products. This not only preserves the integrity of our bulbs but also strengthens our commitment to sustainability.

Sustainably grown Amaryllis bulbs

At Chan Chan, we are fully committed to sustainable cultivation, focusing on people, the environment and the product:

  • Cultivation using natural resources;
  • Drip irrigation to prevent water waste;
  • Minimal need for crop protection products;
  • Optimal outdoor growing conditions that reduce crop diseases;
  • Maximum use of sunlight;
  • Reuse of packaging with collapsible crates;
  • Contribution to the local economic development;
  • Investment in personal development and healthcare to benefit the community;
  • Certification according to Global GAP and GRASP standards.

Rising tulip prices in 2025: what are the causes?

Prices for tulip bulbs will go up significantly next fall season, rising as much as 50 to 100 percent. This is a direct result of several factors that have had their impact on tulip harvests and supply in recent seasons. In this interview with Timmo, dry sales & post-orders sales manager, we tell you all about this development.

Shortage due to changing weather conditions

Over the past two years, growers have had to deal with bad harvests. This was partly caused by changing weather conditions, resulting in lower yields. The reduced supply caused not only higher prices but also shortages in the market, especially for end users.

Smaller acreage, finer planted tulips and more bulbs sent to forcing

For the upcoming harvest season, the acreage of planted tulips is smaller than previous years. In addition, growers have decided to plant “finer,” which means fewer large sizes of tulip bulbs (12/+ and 14/+) will be available and that a more limited harvest can also be expected in the new season.

Another important trend is that more and more tulip bulbs are being used for forcing. “We see that the demand from forcing continues to increase, ” says Timmo. “These bulbs are being used to grow flowers and therefore do not become available for dry sales.” This creates additional pressure on availability for dry sales, which further increases prices.

Faith in the future!

Although the exact impact depends on the harvest next summer, prices are expected to rise significantly. “We expect prices to be 50-100% higher than in 2024,” Timmo said. Still, the demand for tulip bulbs remains undiminished. “Despite the price increase, we see that customers are still buying in large quantities. That gives confidence for the upcoming season.”

Here’s to a successful season!

Although it promises to be a challenging year, the request for tulip bulbs remains as high as ever. “We stay positive,” says Timmo. “If the growing season cooperates, we can still meet the demand and have a great season ahead.”

Tips & Tricks for overwintering Peonies (Paeonia)

Overwintering potted Peonies follows similar principles as other perennials, though certain parts of the process can be fine-tuned for optimal care.

Location
Ideally, keep Paeonies in a hoop or poly house with ventilation options. Ventilation prevents early growth of the eyes during dormancy in case of temperature fluctuations, supporting healthy root development. When keeping Peonies outside, monitor weather conditions closely. Cover pots during sudden cold snaps or extreme conditions. Prevent the soil from freezing solid and ensure roots remain firmly in the soil for healthy growth.

Temperature Requirements
Fall-potted peonies require 500-700 hours at 32-37ºF for vernalization. Plants imported from the Netherlands after January 1 don’t require this and have been vernalized already. After this cold period, Peonies grow best naturally and cool, without additional heating. Good ventilation is important.

Watering
Peonies are sensitive to overwatering! Overwatering, or allowing the soil to become soggy, can lead to root rot. After the initial watering, wait until the plants begin to emerge before watering again. During growth, water as needed (the soil should be neither too dry nor too wet).
